In recent years, the U.S. Postal Service has seen staffing shortages coupled with increased package volume which contributed to service delays and poor customer experience. The idea is to develop a proof-of-concept, data-driven analytical framework to identify “sweet spots” or rural, underserved communities where emerging technologies are best suited (i.e., affordable, efficient, and effective) to improve USPS service equity. Different solutions (e.g., drones, autonomous vehicles, automated lockers) will be evaluated. The research outcome can drive further studies and help USPS develop a strategy for maximizing service equity in the long run.
