The phrase \u201cfood waste\u201d may conjure images of moldy leftovers and slimy spinach fermenting in a refrigerator drawer, but the reality is that much of our nation\u2019s food waste consists of <a href=\"https:\/\/refed.org\/food-waste\/the-problem\/\">safe and edible food<\/a>.<\/span> <span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW188589137 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188589137 BCX0\">Globally, we waste enough food to feed the world\u2019s entire undernourished population <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/stories\/5-facts-about-food-waste-and-hunger\">twice over<\/a>. As it decomposes, wasted food releases harmful gases that build up in the atmosphere and can interfere with worldwide weather patterns, with consequences ranging from small lifestyle disruptions to cataclysmic natural disasters. To realize this ambition, leading food waste experts recommend a simple but effective \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/champions123.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-09\/champions-12-3-2019-progress-report.pdf\">Target-Measure-Act<\/a>\u201d approach:<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 16px\">1. Act<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 16px\">to reduce food waste<\/span><\/p>\n<p>MITRE and Gallup conducted this nationally representative survey of 9,259 American households to better understand the state of food waste in America and raise awareness about factors that can help reduce it.
