The CIAS\u00ae K-12 Cybersecurity Program, with In-Kind Presenting Sponsor The MITRE Corporation, provides an innovative approach to improving and expanding student interest in STEM education, specifically cybersecurity.<\/p>\n

This initiative exposes K-12 students to cybersecurity education and possible career paths in this discipline. National Science Bowl<\/h2>\n

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students\u2019 knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. These teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.<\/p>\n

The Department of Energy (DOE) created the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. Approximately 315,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl\u00ae throughout its 30-year history, and it is one of the nation\u2019s largest science competitions.<\/p>\n

Beginning in January each year, more than 9,000 high school students and 5,000 middle school students will compete in 65 high school and 50 middle school regional Science Bowl tournaments. The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science manages the National Science Bowl, and sponsors the NSB finals competition. The Department of Energy’s Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.<\/p>\n

Texas Solar Race Car Event\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Solar cars is an afterschool science program offered in 90 different schools with 1,300 students. They are provided a solar panel, gear box, and axle rods but the rest of the car design is up to them. In addition to learning about teamwork, students are also developing their engineering skills through the design and testing process.<\/p>\n

Northside School Board Trustee, Bobby Blount, is the long-time organizer of the event which started as a mentorship project at Rayburn Middle School to give students hands-on lessons in teamwork, renewable energy, problem-solving, and science and engineering.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love seeing the students\u2019 excitement as they compete,\u201d says Blount. \u201cThis is a real-life problem for teams to solve and it\u2019s important that students see science and math as fun. These races help do just that.\u201d<\/p>\n
